Quick answers.
What accounting services do Singapore SMEs usually need?
More than one tax form a year. Done properly, it is monthly financial statements and IRAS corporate tax returns, spread through the year so nothing piles up before a deadline.
When do I need to file my corporate tax return?
Estimated Chargeable Income (ECI) is due by the end of the third month after your financial year ends, and the Corporate Income Tax Return by 30 November every year. Form C-S is due even if your company made a loss. No ECI is needed if your revenue is S$5m or less and your ECI is nil.
Do new companies qualify for IRAS tax exemption?
Yes. IRAS gives qualifying companies a tax exemption for their first three years of assessment, which can sharply cut the tax on the first portion of profits. It only works if your accounts are prepared properly and your filings are done correctly.
Can I do my own bookkeeping instead of hiring an accountant?
Yes, and many founders do in the early days. Bookkeeping mistakes tend to show up at the worst moment: IRAS or ACRA questions a filing, a late notice lands, or investors ask to see your books. By then, the fines or missed funding can cost far more than doing it properly from the start.
